Palermo is Italy’s Capital of Culture 2018

This is the year to visit Palermo as it is officially Italy’s Capital of Culture 2018. Announced at the end of January by Italy’s Minister for Cultural Heritage and Art, the city not only receives the prestigious title but a large grant to promote cultural activities and invest in its artistic heritage. For residents of the city, it is a proud moment. For those who love art and culture it really is the time to start planning a trip there.

A family trip to Cefalù

Spring is an ideal time for visiting Sicily. The town of Cefalù on the northern coast is particularly charming before the temperature soars and the hoards descend. Lorenza Bacino and her family enjoyed the April sunshine exploring this delightful town and the nearby Madonie Regional Park.

Sweet Northern Sicily – where the mountains sweep to the sea

Villa Charme lives up to its name for Neil Sowerby as he chills out near Cefalù
LOCATION, location, location. Some film scenes are so luminous you never forget them. Turn the corner onto Cefalù’s Porta Marina and it all comes flooding back almost 30 years on from Cinema Paradiso’s debut. Director Giuseppe Tornatore’s Oscar-winning homage to the power of moving pictures was shot in several places in the north of Sicily, but none etches on the mind like this stunning seaside resort.

Delicious Sicily: Part 2- Palermo Market and Cooking at Massimo Villas

This is probably the highlight of my Sicilian trip and it’s because of the wonderful home cooking experience. Since the cooking was in the evening, we decided to visit Palermo, more precisely the street market, yipeeee!

Before I start, I’ll share the video of the home cooking, Private Chef, Cefalu by Joolzy on for those who prefer to watch rather than to read. Julian did a great job in delivering the true atmosphere of the evening in his short video, and I’m looking forward to seeing more videos  on the rest of the trip soon.

A Family Holiday in Sicily with Massimo Villas

Arriving at night into the airport at Palermo, we did not see the mountains of Sicily which came to characterise our stay in the country.  Even in the dark we could tell this country was full of mountains because we soon found ourselves driving into and out of tunnels hewn through the stone.  From Cefalu, a small town about 40 minutes from the capitol city of Palermo, we headed off the main road further into the inky darkness.  Our car wound threaded its way up the side of the mountain in search of the villa from Massimo Villas which would be our home for the week.

Sicily is the perfect location for a super family break.

Despite being only 3km wide the Strait of  Messina that separates Sicily from the mainland you’d be forgiven for thinking they were a million km away. Yes, there are traces of Italy here for sure but Sicily is so much calmer, more laid back but there is still that golden thread of culture that runs through both.

Tara’s busy kitchen and other stories

Last weekend I spent a glorious few days in the idyllic town of Cefalu on the northern coast of Sicily. We were staying in the gorgeous Villa Borghetto about 6km out of the main town up in the hills. My sister and I were holidaymakers on a foodie mission and were hungry to try some local delights. We were lucky enough to have a guide to show us the sights of the town and also the good places to eat and drink.

Sicily – Find Your Perfect Holiday

Sicily is a unique Mediterranean island. Few who visit fail to be surprised at what awaits them there. With beautiful weather on offer for most of the year, you are virtually guaranteed a pleasant stay. The island is beautifully accessible, too, especially since it has several major airports. Throughout the year, many tourists arrive via flights into Catania, Palermo and Comiso. All are well-placed to provide easy onward journeys to the tourist’s ultimate destination – their holiday accommodation.

Q. We are trying to organise a family gathering next summer in France or Italy. We are a group of eight 50-60ish active people. Can you advise of any villas in or near places of culture and beauty that are at least four-star and have four double rooms (no twins or bunks), of which at least two are en suite? We also need wi-fi, a good kitchen and a dishwasher. A swimming pool and air conditioning would be good too.

Stay in nearby Villa Carmela with The Massimo Villa Collection, who can organise a tour with qualified volcanologists.  You’ll discover dramatic lava flows, caves and craters – then taste the Etna Rosso wine, made from the fertile slopes of the volcano. Classic car enthusiasts inspired by the long awaited, recently released Pistons Passions Pleasures – A Sicilian Dream can head to Sicily with the Massimo Villa Collection to see the areas where filming took place. This drama documentary, featuring Alain de Cadenet and Francesco da Mosto, explores the rise and fall of the Targa Florio, a Sicilian mountain road race held between 1906 and 1977 which gave birth to an era of motorsport that is still popular today. While early races toured the whole island, in later years much of the racing took place in the Madonie mountains.

Massimo’s October Press Release

Winter Warmers

Summer may be a distant memory, but there is no need to feel glum at the thought of winter approaching. The season is a surprisingly good time to visit Sicily according to rental specialist, the Massimo Villa Collection, because there is so much to see and do, yet the crowds are smaller and the weather cooler for sightseeing. Everyone from the Greeks and Romans to the Normans and Arabs have left their mark on this small island, and the important archaeological and historical sites are wonderfully free of tourists in the winter months.

Massimo’s Sept press release

With summer having come and gone, those yearning for sun, sand and sea should look no further than Sicily this autumn, when prices tumble, the crowds melt away and the temperatures are warm, but more comfortable than the highs of summer. Sicily villa rental specialist, the Massimo Villa Collection still has availability left for September, October and November, with jaw-dropping villas available at affordable prices. A collection of new properties are also introduced this autumn, with the portfolio now featuring 60 properties, from designer villas to converted farmhouses, and seafront pads, townhouses and sprawling countryside retreats, sleeping between 2 and 28 guests.

Cefalu, Triumphs sicilian town put on the map by unesco & san pellegrino

After years in the shadow of other major Sicilian attractions, the historic Sicilian seaside town of Cefalù – which is home to the founder of the Massimo Villa Collection – has finally been put on the map. This is in part thanks to the announcement that UNESCO has awarded World Heritage status to its Arabic and Norman cathedral. Particularly admired for its mosaics and the spell binding Christ Pantokrator, the newly crowned Duomo di Cefalù (pronounced chef-a-loo) is bound to give a boost to this northern coastal town.

Organic farming boom in Sicily

Organic farming is booming in Sicily, with the island home to approximately one third of Italy’s organic farms and 50% of the country’s fruit producers. According to new regional specialist on the scene, the Massimo Villa Collection, the growth and conversion to organic has much to do with the Libera Terra co-operatives, a network of organic farms re-using confiscated Mafia land.
