As an Italian I have always taken my time looking around, listening to my needs and enjoying the present. Because of all the Scandinavian tourists travelling to Sicily on a yearly basis I have noticed that this way of life is nonexistent among many Swedes. The Swedes have forgotten how to experience the world.
The traditional way of travelling often means an all inclusive vacation on a five star hotel, preferably in a chair next to the pool. You are located in this new, exciting, country, with a new, foreign, culture, and somehow this slips through the fingers of many tourists: We no longer take our time exploring our vacation spots. The Swedes have forgotten how to experience the world and consequently how to acknowledge the different impressions offered by the world.
Despite all this, it can indeed be very relaxing to stay at a hotel. However, it is far from ideal if you truly want to maximise your experience. Therefore, instead of filtering the world around you through an Instagram filter next to the pool, you could choose to stay closer to the culture. By doing this, you can easily getting to know the people around you and in doing so become more understanding towards other perspectives and living conditions. In a time where xenophobia and racisms grows stronger a more personal vacation can revive our humanity.
Consequently, it is when we dare to have our vacation in a house among the natural inhabitants that we for real can understand a location as well as its’ culture. Despite many people’s beliefs, renting a house does not mean compromising the level of luxury, nor does it mean lost of comfort. Instead, I would like to argue it means exactly the opposite. Not only can renting a house create a more genuine travelling experience, but it also creates a tendered and more relaxing vacation, where you can easily tailor your stay after your personal needs. When renting a house, you live under your own rules and hours, without having to worry about details such as when the breakfast is served and on what times the pool is open.
Furthermore, you will not have to worry about formalities or your children’s comfort. A vacation should be about taking care on a relaxing location, suited for every member of the family. It should be about calmly experience different sides of the world that you did not even know existed. A hotel is a place you get to know in a few days to the loss of the location you were actually planning to visit. Hotels are the same everywhere, but can you truly say that you have experienced another country until you have wandered outside the shielded experience created by your guide? Can you truly say that you have experienced a different culture and location until you have spoken to its’ habitants and experienced their way of life?
To conclude, there is a whole world out there to experience and a whole sea of people to relate to. All we need to do is to let ourselves take part of it.
