Best Beaches in Palermo
Palermo is a well-known and significant destination for many holidaymakers looking to have a great break in Sicily. Located in the north-western part of the island, it provides access to a great many beaches, some of which might be just right for you. Now we shall take a virtual wander onto the sands of some of these beaches, so you may know which ones to visit for real once you arrive at your villa in Palermo.
Addaura Beach Watch for the dramatic scenery provided by Mount Pellegrino, which looms over Addaura Beach and offers a little extra drama for those who love an excellent photo opportunity. The beach is quite beautiful, to say the least, looking out onto the Gulf of Mondello. There are many villas here, and the coast sweeps around from one side to the other, naturally providing a cosier feel and an area to swim in that is usually quite appealing. Indeed, another perk here is that the waters are very shallow for quite some distance. It makes Addaura beach an excellent choice for those with young children since they will not be too concerned about the depth of the water becoming too much for them.
Mondello Beach Of all the beaches in this area of Sicily, this is likely to be the Palermo beach you have heard of long before you arrive on the island. Boasting lots of white sand and a quite beautiful stretch of lush green vegetation beyond the sand itself, it is no surprise to learn that Mondello Beach is a favourite among many. Indeed when you see locals enjoying a particular beach in their masses, it is usually a good sign that the tourists will enjoy it too, undoubtedly the case with Mondello Beach. Offering a mile and a half of great spots to lay a beach towel or two, Mondello Beach also has the perk of being nice and close to all kinds of amenities and facilities. If you tire of sunbathing (unlikely but you never know) you always have Mondello itself within a pebble’s throw of the beach itself. It means you are free to wander and perhaps to enjoy a nice meal to finish off a day at the beach.
Arenella Beach The Arenella is a mere 20 minutes’ away from the centre of Palermo, and therefore easy for most to reach. Known by some as an urban beach, this description does not do it justice. However, you should prepare for the presence of a city skyline that faces the beach itself. If you’re happy with that, you may well be satisfied with Arenella Beach. It is one for those who aren’t too keen on their beach being overcrowded, which can be the case with the ones mentioned above.
Cefalu Beach While Cefalu Beach is not strictly in Palermo itself, it is not that far outside of it, and so it is included within this section. It can be found around 45 minutes away from Palermo by car, enjoying a scenic route in an easterly direction along the coast. The journey is worth it too because Cefalu Beach widely regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches on the island as a whole has to offer. It is also good to visit if you like your beach to be well-presented. The facilities are excellent here, and families can often be seen staking out their spot on the sands. If you are the type of person who likes to take in the odd day trip away from your holiday location, Cefalu would indeed be a good choice. Imagine for example a half-day spent exploring the town and a half-day relaxing on the beach for the perfect day out.
Cala Rossa Beach This beach should treat as a reward for those tourists who are prepared to travel slightly outside of the immediate area of Palermo. Many who have already found it have enjoyed its many perks, not least of which are the rugged rocks, coloured in red with white streaks running through them. It certainly provides a somewhat more dramatic backdrop than many other beaches in the area tend to have. There is a sign that will lead you down to this particular beach, and the journey down the steps is well worth making when you see the promise of the sea and the rocks beyond. Despite the dramatic entrance, the waters are shallow to start with, enabling you to move out from the shore without danger. It is bliss, and it is a classic example of discovering a beach that is rarely crowded, or indeed boasting many people there at all.
Make your choice of beach in Palermo one to remember As you can see, one of the most excellent things about finding a good beach in Palermo is that there is something here for everyone. It holds the promise of vast stretches of white or golden sand that are ideal for couples and families. It also has one or two little treats tucked away for those who are prepared to go and find them. Surely this is appealing enough for the many who will travel to Palermo to enjoy its treasures this year.
