Top Beaches in Syracuse
Syracuse, or Siracusa if you prefer, there is the opportunity to explore many a delightful beach. Nestled in a prime spot in the south-eastern corner of Sicily, Syracuse includes the small island of Ortigia and also boasts a significant section of coastline as its own. From here there are numerous opportunities to find a sandy stretch of beach for a half-day or a day, and you will never run short of things to do or views to appreciate while you are there.
Let’s take a look at some of the highlights this part of Sicily has to offer by way of stunning beaches:
Many words could be used to describe Calamosche Beach. However, This beach is one of the most beautiful beaches across not just the whole of Sicily, but the whole of Italy as well? Indeed it has, and this should give you some idea of what to expect. However, with that said, you may still wonder what to expect when you get there. It is beautiful for many reasons, but perhaps one of them is the lack of facilities it has to offer.
This may come as a disappointment to some, but it is something that is deemed to be part of the reason why it is so attractive. It does mean you have to go fully prepared though, so bear this in mind. If you love beaches that are natural, rustic and genuinely stunning, Calamosche does not disappoint.
This beach lies within the nature reserve in this area, and thus you get a two-for-one opportunity to spend a fascinating day sunbathing and exploring. As with Calamosche beach above, there are no facilities here either. Since you may well find yourself with a real lack of shade for some of the day, do make sure you take plenty of water and drinks with you, along with lots of food. It’s better to have too much than too little. The beach itself is pleasing and free from facilities and commercialism. It makes it more appealing for some, especially since you are in the centre of a nature reserve. Make sure you take a closer look at the ruins here too, which you’ll be able to walk to once you arrive on the beach. It is well worth a closer look but essential.
The Beach of the Ants
It may not sound appealing but don’t let the dubious name put you off! A stunning area and it offers far more than just sand to all those who visit too. For example, you also get quite a dramatic section of coastline complete with caves that are well worth exploring. It is the type of beach that would be ideal for those who are not merely content to sit back and relax with a charming book for the duration of their holiday on the sands.
Sometimes referred to as Agnone Bagni, this beach provides a beautiful stretch of sand to explore. There is also a terrific view of the mighty Mount Etna, towering over this side of Sicily. Not all of the beach is free, but a good portion of it is, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a spot to stake out as your own for the day. This beach is also loved by families, particularly as the waters here are quite pleasant and not too rough.
Punta Asparano Beach
If you like the idea of a beach with more to offer than just sand (much like the Beach of the Ants for example), you may well enjoy the beach at Punta Asparano. It stretches for a little over a mile all in all and is comprised of different areas that can be reached from various points. It is also a beach that is ideal to see if you don’t want to be surrounded by vast crowds of people all the time. While you won’t be the only one there, it is far less packed than many of the beaches we have already mentioned.
San Lorenzo Beach
This might be a better option for you if you prefer to have services to fall back on for drinks, snacks and other items. The sands are nice and golden, and many say this particular beach brings forth a taste of the Caribbean. The waters are undoubtedly clear here and beautifully-coloured in turquoise, and they remain relatively shallow for a while as well, which is a good thing if you have kids in tow.
